Top 5 Tips and Tricks You Need to Know : Nexus 7

Nexus 7: Top 5 Tips and Tricks You Need to Know

Nexus 7 (2013)The new Nexus 7, with its great set of specs, continues to be the most responsive and easy-to-use tablet on the market. This 7-inch plain looking tablet is priced at just $230, and thus delivers quality on budget. If you own the one and can’t resist yourself to harness all of the power of your Nexus 7, here are top 5 tips and tricks that will help you get most out of it.

Nexus 7 (2013) Tips and Tricks

1. Change the Keyboard Click Volume
The new Nexus 7 has two loud, rear-facing stereo speakers to generate a great deal of volume that will greatly enhance your experience when you’re watching a movie or listening to music. But what if you’re typing? Since the Nexus 7 lacks a vibration motor, so whenever you press a key, the loud noise of on-screen clicking will grind your gears. To have a quieter typing experience,
Keep pressing the microphone icon until the settings button appears.
  • Tap Google Keyboard Settings.
  • Scroll down to select Advanced Settings.
  • In Advanced Settings Menu, tap Keypress Sound Volume and adjust the slider to set the level of volume that you prefer.
Now you’re done. To turn off keyboard sounds, just uncheck Sound on key press option under “Google Keyboard Settings”.

2. Use Gesture Typing

This amazing feature allows you to type by just gliding your finger across the keyboard rather than typing the letters individually. Here’s how to use gesture typing,
  • Open the location where you want to type into.
  • Slide your finger across the letters of the word you want to have.
  • Nexus 7 will then try to predict the word you’re typing. Release your finger when the desired word appears in the floating preview or tap on any alternative word in the suggestion strip to choose it instead.
  • In case the word doesn’t appear while using Gesture Typing, you can type it manually.
Keep in mind that the Gesture Typing is set to use without the space bar, just lift your finger when you’re done and then type the next word.

3. Stay Secure with Face Unlock

You can unlock your Google Nexus 7 using your face rather inserting a PIN number, Password or Pattern. Though Face Unlock isn’t a very secure method, it’s convenient and fun to use. Here’s how to set up Face Unlock,
  • Go to this path: Settings > Personal > Security > Screen lock > Face Unlock
  • Tap Set it up and then click Continue.
  • Set Nexus 7 to fit your face inside the template on the screen and it will ask what you want to do.
  • Choose either Pattern or Pin and enter your security number
  • Click Next and then confirm your Pattern or Pin to activate the Face Unlock.
4. Take a Screenshot on Your Tablet
Taking screenshot on your Nexus 7 tablet isn’t difficult at all; you no longer need to install Android SDK or root your device for this purpose.
  • When the image you want to capture is displayed on the screen, hold the Volume down and Power buttons at the same time
And you’re done.
Both the Volume down and Power buttons are on the right side of the device when it’s held vertically. Once the screenshot is taken successfully, you’ll be confirmed by a sound feedback and the screen shot is automatically saved in the Gallery app.

5. Get More with Google Now

Want to get informed before you even know you need to dig that topic? You need to activate the Google Now on your Nexus 7. You can get a lot out of this app; for example, set up cards about Weather, Public transport, Time & Date, Maps and many more to get the information you want to see, when you want to see.
To activate Google Now,
  • Hold any of the bottom menu buttons and then swipe up towards the Google icon on the Home screen.
However if you don’t want these cards to be displayed, just turn off Google Now that will return any card settings to their initial settings.
You can find more basic tips and tricks about your tablet from Nexus 7 Guidebook 2013 by Google that has details about almost all the features of the device.
If you find difficulty with any other feature of Nexus 7, leave us a comment and we’ll try to help you out.

Modder’s Column: How To Remap Your Android Phone’s Hardware Buttons Without Touching A Single Line Of Code

So maybe you've recently upgraded your Android phone and haven't gotten used to the new device's button alignment yet... or maybe you never use that pesky Search key and want to turn it into the camera key your EVO 4G has always wanted... or maybe you just enjoy tinkering with your phone. If you're in one of those situations, what you may be lusting after is a way to remap your phone's hardware buttons (i.e. making the Search key take on the duties of the Home key, or vise versa).
Up until now, there haven't been any user-friendly methods of doing this, at least not any that can be so greatly customized. Well, the deprivation is over - Beansoft (also known as appelflap around the XDA-Developers forums) has developed the handy ButtonRemapper app, which provides users a simple-as-can-be way of remapping the staple Android buttons (Home, Menu, Back, and Search). The app does more than that, however - read on for the full story.

For starters, it's not just the staple Android keys that can be remapped using ButtonRemapper - you can also mess with the Power, Volume Up, Volume Down, and End Call buttons (assuming your device has them). Better yet, you can customize the aforementioned buttons in ways you never even thought possible - here are the actions you can set them to perform:
  • Power
  • Home
  • Menu
  • Back
  • Search
  • Volume Up
  • Volume Down
  • Camera
  • Focus
  • Call
  • End Call
  • Media Play Pause
  • Media Stop
  • Media Next
  • Media Previous
  • Media Rewind
  • Media Fast Forward
  • D-pad Center
  • D-pad Up
  • D-pad Left
  • D-pad Right
After you switch the buttons' functions and apply your modifications, your phone will perform a "hot reboot," a sort of partial reboot which takes roughly half the time of a full system restart.

The app also offers the ability to change each button's state - you can choose from "NONE," "WAKE," and "WAKE_DROPPED." The second of the modes presumably allows the button to function even when the device is in sleep mode, while the first and third should limit the button to functioning exclusively when your phone is awake. Strangely enough, I haven't observed any change in the buttons' behavior after switching these states, though this could just be my EVO.

As an added bonus for tech-savvy users, Beansoft has included the buttons' code numbers so as to make it easier for interested parties to modify the keys' functions the longhand way (i.e. editing the key layout map file, which is explained in detail here). Even more helpful is Beansoft's own KeynrTracker application, which can be downloaded from here.
Despite all of ButtonRemapper's fantastic features, there are a few things you should know about, namely:
  1. If you're using a Galaxy Tab, you'll have to download a special version.
  2. Unfortunately, the Motorola Droid 2 and Huawei U8110 are not supported at the time of this writing.
  3. The version of the app you'll find in the Market is a paid, $0.99 donation edition. Beansoft is also offering the app free of charge for those who find it in the XDA forums.
Of course, no matter how great an app is at remapping buttons, there's always going to be one relatively huge issue: the fact that the functions of the buttons won't align with the actual labels on the keys. While this won't be an issue if you're like me and you don't even look at the button you're pressing, it means Android newbies might want to stay away from this app.
Nonetheless, if you're switching Android phones (i.e. buying a Droid X after owning a Droid Eris for a while) and don't want to waste time getting used to a new button alignment, ButtonRemapper is certainly worth a look. You know what to do - QR codes, AppBrain links, and more are patiently awaiting your click/scan below.
